J-Rock Sunday: Wherever You Are by ONE OK ROCK

Sometimes, I just feel like I'd been living under a rock. And one of those times is after hearing / watching the video of ONE OK ROCK's song Wherever You Are. C'mon now... I call myself a J-Rock fan, yet this brilliant band managed to slip through my eyes and ears for a long time now. Heh...

ONE OK ROCK has been active in the music scene since 2005, but it was only in 2007 that they released their first single and full album. The band's name intrigued me and so I looked it up and Wiki says:

The band's name, One Ok Rock, comes from "one o'clock", the time that the band used to practice on weekends. However, noticing that the Japanese language made no distinction between r's and l's, they changed "o'clock" to "o'crock" (or "o'krock"), which was then separated to become "ok rock".

Nifty, huh? Not to mention quite a bit silly. Well, you know how it is when it comes to Japanese bands' names, meheheh...

Ok, back to the topic. Wherever You Are is the 9th track from the band's fourth studio album Niche Syndrome. When I first heard it, I found myself easily amazed as the first verse was sung in English. I even strained my ear to check if I'm hearing things correctly, like I wondered if the vocalist only sings in Japanese with a foreign accent or what, but turns out the song is actually English and Japanese. Mind you, it's English and not Engrish. Oh please, I hope no one gets offended as I'm just stating my own opinion. Love and Peace! Tee-hee... But honestly, for me it's kinda rare to hear J-bands sing clearly in English, and I like it when they do. So this thing about ONE OK ROCK is definitely a plus in my book.

BTW, this is slow rock stuff. The lyrics are very sweet and sigh-inducing (for lack of better description), and Taka-san's angsty vocals fit the song very well without being irritating. The melody itself and the music from the instruments are quite simple, which adds to the romantic feel of the track. Even the bassline is pretty simple, thankfully, so I was able to play it without wracking my fingers. Eheheh... Honestly, I just love this song so much now that I'd want to hear this on my wedding...

To us, the day we met is the day
We should commemorate the most
Then, this day called today is the day
We should commemorate the second most

Someone I can love from my heart
Someone I love from my heart
In the center of my love
You, my heart, are there

Wherever you are, I always make you smile
Wherever you are, I'm always by your side
Whatever you say, you're always on my mind
I promise you forever right now

Wherever you are
Wherever you are
Wherever you are

Otaku Alert! No. 6

"In a reality so inhumane, almost too inhumane, the only thing one could do to remain human was to refuse to abandon one's feelings for others, and to hold onto one's own human soul."

~ No. 6, Volume 4 Chapter 4

Anime art. Photo via Google.

No. 6 -- an enormous nation-state; an ideal place called the 'Holy City' by its inhabitants. West Block -- a barren wasteland forever outside the walls of that utopian city. The year is 2013. And this is stage for the story of two boys -- Shion and Nezumi. One living inside the wall, and one living outside it. But, as if guided by fate (or is it miracle?), these two meet and discover life and everything that surrounds it, while unfolding the secrets of the city of No. 6.

Before I go any further, please let me advise that this anime is NOT for everyone. It has violence and gore (though I can say not that much), some morbid and disturbing matter, and... elements of shounen-ai / yaoi. So if this is not your cup of tea or you are easily repulsed by these, then you may wanna steer clear of this show.

Moving on...

I 'accidentally' found out about this anime while leafing through the pages of one of my Otakuzine (an anime mag) issues. I saw a pic of the two bishounen characters along with the title, so I searched for the series. And just so you know, bishounens warrant my attention. Ohoho~

I like the sci-fi / near-future setting of the show though not that realistic (it's already 2012, remember?), but it's appealing enough the way it was rendered. As for the plot / storyline -- sure, it doesn't have the most original or mind-blowing stuff that makes your brain cells work overtime, but I'd say it's intriguing and solid. To sum it up, No. 6 is an anime with a beautiful story which teaches us to place utmost importance in the world we live in, and to value human lives and our relationships with one another.

The soundtrack is so-so, definitely far from the ranks of Eva and Escaflowne, but I couldn't really care less. Honestly, I don't like hearing the ending theme "Rokutousei no Yoru" by Aimer. I have nothing against it. In fact it's a beautiful track, but it's just so sad and melancholic for my tastes that I can't help but sigh. The opening theme "Spell" by Lama is an electronic / pop-rock stuff; and the small, sugary-sweet voice is kinda annoying, but I guess it grew on me and I ended up putting it in my playlist. Heheh...

Now, the aspect I love the most about No. 6: its characters. First off, it doesn't have too many to the point that it gets confusing. Every one of them is diverse, but they're well-put and serves their own purpose in the story. But of course, I love Nezumi and Shion most! They have very different personalities (Nezumi is tsundere while Shion is yandere), yet both are likeable and they go well together. Their character development was nicely projected, and I loved watching / reading their journey to self-discovery. People say that their 'relationship' falls in the yaoi / shounen-ai category and I can't deny that (just please don't get me started on things like gender preferences, what my views are about it, stuff like that -- I might not be able to finish this or I'll have to make a second No. 6 post). Though in my opinion, it's on an entirely different level than say, Junjou Romantica. This one is more 'innocent' and they change and grow steadily throughout the story, which I find more endearing. What with lines (from the novel, thoughts of Shion) like:

"Have you noticed, Nezumi? No matter how dark or blindingly bright it is, I'm never led astray― my eyes always find yours."

"This is where my heart is. I was human when my heart was stolen by him, and I was human when I longed to be by his side. And this fact won't change, no matter what name I give to these feelings."

Awww... Alright, 'nuff said.

Kawaii!

Now, my main gripe -- though the anime itself tried to stand on its own two feet, one will find many loopholes and untied strings. After the first few episodes, everything feels rushed, like they tried too hard to get it completed early. Ugh! I tell you, it's a bad thing. Especially that this is based on a novel with 9 volumes! C'mon... Cramming all of them into barely a dozen episodes? I may be okay with 24 (which is common for anime) it probably should be enough, but 11??? Crazy. Somehow, I can't believe when I learned that this show finishes on the 11th ep. After watching it, I was like "The hell? That's it?". Argh! I was literally shaking my head and pulling my hair. It also creates a bit of confusion 'cause a lot of details or scenes do not match the ones in the novel (so screams the purist in me). Some, if not most, are downright mixed-up in the anime, and they even included stuff which are not originally present. I honestly hate when this happens, like it doesn't do justice to the novel... Lucky enough for me, I watched the anime first before reading the novel and manga. Come to think of it, I don't know of any movie / show in recent memory that exactly captured or stayed faithful to their written material where they were based off. Probably some of the anime based on manga, or yeah, Persona 4 The Animation. Now that's more like it. But given my rant, it still does little in preventing me from enjoying this show.

Well, know what? It's either I'm not really satisfied with how it went, or I love this anime too much on the contrary -- but something inside prompted me to watch the whole series twice consecutively. Yes. So far, this is only anime which gained that treatment from me. Or, I'm probably too engrossed and can't stop fangirling over the pair of Nezumi and Shion... Kyaaaa! *faints*

Manga art. Photo via Google.

If all of my blabbering enticed you in some way to watch this anime AND read the manga / novel, please let me suggest that you watch before you read. Spare yourself the heartache. I guess it should go without saying that the novel is miles waaaay better, though it doesn't mean that you should overlook the anime. Oh, I should add that the novel has 9 volumes (6 of which have been translated to English at the moment -- they are non-official; and as for the translations, I have to thank the kind citizens of the web for these), the anime has 11 episodes, the manga has 15 chapters so far (and good thing it tries to remain faithful to the novel).

Whew... It feels so great getting all of these off my chest, and off my brain! It actually took a couple of days for me to complete this post. As much as possible, I wanna make sure that I've included everything that I like (and don't-really-like) about this anime. But I guess by now you should know that I absolutely love No. 6. This is definitely one that took my heart away and left me sitting there wanting more...

Now, please if you'll excuse me. I'm only halfway through the novel. Shion and Nezumi are calling...

BTW, I also intended for this to be my 100th post. Yay! Keep going, keep going... がんばります!

Ever Bilena Matte Lipstick in Siennas

Konbanwa!

Another lippie post! Told ya I'm slowwwly getting addicted to it. LOL! This time, I have Ever Bilena Matte Lipstick in Siennas. I already have this in Pink Flame which I loved (and seeing as majority of beauty bloggers do as well), so I went ahead and got another shade. Okay I admit, I just wasn't that strong enough to resist the urge to purchase when I passed by the EB counter. Gah!

Siennas is a warm red shade with just a hint of brown, but still wearable. For me, it's a safe red color (if there is such a thing, haha) that's not over-the-top, if you know what I mean. And I think it should suit most skin tones.

The lippie is housed in a classy black matte tube that comes in a box, but it's just a bit disappointing 'cause the metallic font on the actual tube fades over time. Anyway, no big deal. Meheheh... As for the product itself, I'm glad there is no annoying scent (unlike NYX RLS which smells like soap, ugh). As a matte lipstick, it dries out my lips so I make sure to swipe lip balm prior to applying this. Pigmentation is great and I'm actually okay with the staying power. All for the price of Php145.

Overall, a crazy affordable but quality product that does the job. Worth repurchasing if you'd ask me... This lipstick for sure is love!

Gotta go for now, but be sure to see more lippie posts from me!

NYX Round Lipsticks in Tea Rose and Eros

A fact about rina-chan: If there's only one makeup item I could use, that would be a no-brainer for me. My answer is lipstick.

You see, I have pale lips -- yeah, the kind that makes me look ghastly sick if it does not have one bit of color. That's why whenever I go out (and that includes going on simple errands), I make sure to swipe at least a tinted lip balm. Seems that I'm sorta having an addiction to it now, and my lippies collection is pretty much growing! I add to that these two gorgeous shades from NYX.

I got both of them from Digital Traincase at their physical store in Eton Cyberpod, which is only a few cartwheels away from our office. Yes, that's exaggerated. But still, luc-ky! I just love this store.

Tonikaku, I got myself two NYX Round Lipsticks in Tea Rose and Eros.

Let's start with Tea Rose. Oh, how I love those MLBB shades, and this is definitely one of them. It's got that pretty pink color which is great for everyday look Safe and simple. Now I know why this shade is a hit among beauty bloggers.

[Not a big deal, but pardon the lip swatches above. They're taken on two different occasions -- my lips in the angled shot are kinda dry while the one above that is not (which I took when I was sick). I don't know why my lips are fuller and smoother when I'm not feeling well. Meheheh...]

On the other hand, I've been on a lookout for that perfect red lipstick -- Which is why I got Eros, a fire-engine red shade. Actually, I'm gunning for Electra, but they don't have it in stock at the time. Oh well, daijoubu desu yo... Eros to the rescue! To be honest, I rarely wear red lip color outside, no matter what the occasion is. I've always been shy. Really. But it seems I acquired enough guts and spunk this year that I decided "what the heck, let's do that!"... Ohoho~

BTW, this is what I used for my Hunger Games movie date look...

J-Rock Sunday: Shissou by LAST ALLIANCE

Ohayou, minna-san!

You know, one of the things I do when watching a new anime is to go through its opening and ending themes. That's how I get to know new Japanese bands and their songs. Take for example, this song by LAST ALLIANCE.

Photo via Google

I first heard it as the ending for Ouran High School Host Club a couple years back. It was so catchy, has just the perfect rock sound for me, and I find Ryusuke Anzai's voice very fitting for this band and their kind of music. Well, what do you know... After acquiring the mp3 for this particular piece, I went ahead and indulged myself in getting ALL of their singles and albums. Man, I was never disappointed after listening to almost all of the tracks. I absolutely recommend this band to J-Rock fans!

I'm out of breath after running 5000 miles
With 100 liters of adrenaline, I'm at 5 times full power
How much further is good? How far would be OK?
The pattern of the town's trees is getting repetitive

The whiteness that has changed, the weakness that hasn't
I want to believe in the me that's here and now

Raise your left and right hands and pierce through the darkness, GO!
There are no lies, I've decided it
As soon as you cross the starting line the world will open up to you

Flickering over and other until they fade away
The ancient streetlights lead me on my usual way

A nostalgic wind blows through this rusty town
It becomes a tailwind that pushes my back forward

Until your tears dry up, get rid that resignation in your heart, STOP!
There is no goal, there's no coming back
Eternally sprinting, cutting through the wind

Let's return those bitter days, can you open it?
Your dreams are locked inside Pandora's box

Whether you make the first or second move, you must move forward, OK!
It's good to rest a bit, I know that
The process of how I've made it up to here is your proof

Raise your left and right hands and pierce through the darkness, GO!

Rock Sunday: I Want to Fall in Love With You by Jars of Clay

Happy Easter minna-san!

For today's post, I'm featuring Jars of Clay.

I'm not a devout Catholic and honestly, I can't remember clearly the last time I attended Sunday mass, but I've got my faith and I'll always be God's believer. And one thing that helps me in a way is listening to the songs of Christian bands using rock music as their medium to spread His words and teachings.

Such is Jars of Clay, a band from Tennessee whose name was lifted from the NIV translation of 2 Corinthians 4:7 -- "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us."

Kakkoii desu ne?

I find this song from them to be a very beautiful one -- combining great music, vocals, and lyrics into a piece that evokes feelings of peace, serenity, and a desire to serve God in whatever way possible. Anyway, I'll keep it simple and let the lyrics speak for themselves.

"I WANT TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU"
Jars of Clay

In open fields of wild flowers
She breathes the air and flies away
She thanks her Jesus for the daises and the roses
In no simple language, someday she'll understand the meaning of it all

He's more than the laughter or the stars in the heaven
As close as a heartbeat or a song on her lips
Someday she'll trust Him and learn how to see Him
Someday He'll call her and she will come running
and fall in His arms, the tears will fall down and she'll pray

"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"

Sitting silent wearing Sunday best
The sermon echoes through the walls
A great salvation through it calls to the people
Who stare into nowhere, and can't feel the chains on their souls

He's more than the laughter or the stars in the heaven
As close as a heartbeat or a song on our lips
Someday we'll trust Him and learn how to see Him
Someday He'll call us and we will come running
And fall in His arms, the tears will fall down and we'll pray

"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"

It seems too easy to call you "Savior"
Not close enough to call you "God"
So as I sit and think of words I can mention
To show my devotion

"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"

"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"
"I want to fall in love with You"

(My heart beats for You)

Rina-chan's Thoughts On: Ever Bilena Single Blush-On

Konbanwa!

Sunday is coming to an end, and once again, tomorrow is the start of a new workweek. Oh, how I wish restdays were longer... *le sigh*
Okay, enough ranting. Heheh...

Ever Bilena is one of the first local makeup brands I tried, and I always go back to it. With its affordable but quality items, why not? And its blushes are no exception. Ever since I learned how to put on makeup, I rely on EB to put color on my cheeks. Of course I love my Majo Majo Puff de Cheek, but let's just say I'll always have an EB blush in my kit. First ones I've tried were Cheek Blushes in Honest and Raisin.

I was looking for a more pink blush, when this caught my eye and eventually became part of my haul. This is Ever Bilena Single Blush-On in Pink Petal. The color is true to its name! It's a pretty cool pink which I think suits medium to fair skin. LOVE!

Instead of a box, it comes sealed in plastic.

Shade name, ingredients, and other product details. Ooh, Vitamin E!

Love that pink!

The product up-close.

Hand swatch.

And the obligatory selca showing the blush's color on my cheeks. I just applied them lightly here. Don't wanna look like an overdone Barbie now, do we?

Price: Php110 for 4g - purchased at SM Cubao Department Store

I like...
...the color! Perfect pink for those days when you wanna be all dolled up. Kirei da ne?
...the awesome pigmentation! I just need to lightly dip the brush in the pan, tap it a bit and apply it on my cheeks. It gives enough color, and makes one pan last a long, long time.
     ...that it's so affordable.

I'm neutral about...
...its staying power. But I guess 2 to 4 hours is okay. It's not really a bother for me to reapply it.
...the lack of mirror in the packaging. Then again, what else can I ask for the price? And if ever, where will they put it? Duh...

I don't like...
...the twist-type cover, which could be a hassle sometimes.I prefer flip-type ones.

Overall, I find it a great product, as with all the other EB blushes I've tried! Highly-recommended. And it should be enough reason for me to repurchase. I wanna try the Rose shade...

Alright, that's all for now.
